Soprano australiana. Después de estudiar con Mathilde Marchesi (n. 1821–m. 1913) en París, debutó en Bruselas en Rigoletto (1887), y en los siguientes seis años cantó en todos los principales teatros de ópera del mundo. Una de las más famosas sopranos de coloratura de los años previos a la primera guerra mundial, después de 1902 cantó principalmente en el Covent Garden. Poseía una técnica muy rica y una bella voz, y su repertorio estaba concentrado en un número reducido de óperas italianas y francesas. Dos platos fueron bautizados en su honor: la tostada Melba y el durazno Melba.
